Recruiting a capable sales associate can directly affect your bottom line, so it’s vital to write a clear, persuasive job description to attract the best talent to your doorstep.

What Your Job Description Should Include

At the very least, your job description should include:

  • Your company name
  • Office location
  • Job title
  • Working hours
  • Qualifications or previous experience (if applicable)
  • Roles and responsibilities
  • Compensation

Although the job requirements may vary across industries and individual firms, sales associates are first and foremost expected to deliver a great customer experience.

In general, this includes knowledge of the company’s products, engaging with customers, fulfilling their orders, and sometimes dealing with customer complaints. Occasionally, sales associates are also required to reach out to new customers via cold calls, participating in trade fairs etc.

At the same time, sales associates need to adhere to company policy – something that requires problem-solving skills combined with a tactful approach.

It is good practice to also liaise with the team leaders or hiring managers to write the job description. Oftentimes they will have more information about the role, or they might have special input on the roles and responsibilities of the sales associate.

A Note About Qualifications and Experience

When recruiting sales associates, you would ideally want someone with related experience in the industry. However, most of the time this isn’t possible.

With high turnover rates among sales personnel, it’s hard to find someone that’s a 100% fit and can join on short notice. Luckily, what matters for successful sales associates are soft skills – interpersonal skills, communication skills, teamwork, and other skills that aren’t taught in school. Conversely, most of the basics of the business can be imparted via on-the-job training.

Outside of a few specialized roles, sales associates don’t require certifications or licenses. A great sales associate should also be a great communicator and give excellent customer service, as well as have a great attitude. Such skills can be found in experienced candidates and fresh graduates alike.

Therefore, it’s perfectly fine to hire someone with no related experience if you need to. This is where the interview process comes in to sort out the candidates with the best soft skills available.

This is a B2B sales associate ad for a fictional company, Acme Inc. You’ll notice that the requirements are quite general, in line with the discussion about experience we’ve had above. This job description is designed to cast a wider net for candidates in a general sales role.

With so many choices of internship available, it’s important to make your organization’s internship offer stand out amongst the crowd. Here’s how to write a job description for an intern (along with a sample at the end).

What Your Job Description Should Include

At the very least, your job description should include:

  • Your company name
  • Office location
  • Job title
  • Working hours
  • Requirements and qualifications
  • Duration of the internship
  • Compensation (if applicable)

You will also want to set out clear expectations of the role. Highlight want the intern will be doing day-to-day, and also how they can gain experience in their field.

Also, you would want to emphasize why your company is a good place to do an internship. Not all interns are doing it for the experience – plenty are searching for internships to fulfil a course requirement. Describe your company’s culture, values, and perhaps even the perks it has to let prospects know why it is a good place to intern.

Therefore, to successfully recruit and retain Gen Z employees, you need to bridge the generation gap and know what they are like. In short, Gen Z is:

  • Digital first: Gen Z has never known a world without the internet. The smartphone was invented when most of them were toddlers. Previous generations adapted, sometimes unwillingly, to innovations like social media, on-demand entertainment, and an ‘always-on’ lifestyle. On the other hand, Gen Z takes these for granted, with little to no memory of the pre-smartphone age.

Disillusioned by the ‘perfect’, curated images on social media, Gen Z craves the messy reality of authenticity, warts and all. This should be reflected in your employer brand.

If your company has any shortcomings, don’t try to sweep it under the rug – Gen Z will know about it from social media. One of these types of candidates are boomerang employees. Basically, a boomerang employee is someone who previously worked for the company and left, but then gets rehired.

We frequently think that quitting a job is a permanent decision that cannot be reversed. In fact, some organizations have policies against rehiring. However, amidst a historically tight labour market, more and more employers are open to hiring former colleagues.

The boomerang phenomenon is also more common than you think. According to this survey, 15% of employees said they had boomeranged back to a former employer, and nearly 40% said they would consider going back to a company where they previously worked. HR practitioners also use several channels to keep in touch with former colleagues, such as email newsletters and alumni groups.

There are also many reasons why a former employee would wish to return. Perhaps they left to pursue other interests that didn’t work out. Or they had a major life event (parenthood, caregiving duties) and are ready to return to work. Either way, boomerang employees would feel familiar with the company – and in some cases, even gain skills elsewhere to grow in a new role.

But do take note that employees should have left the company recently to be considered a ‘boomerang’. An employee that left more than 10 years ago should be treated as a new hire.

  • Why are you looking to return? Could you tell us what excites you about this role?
    • This shows their reasons and motivations to boomerang back. From there, you can evaluate if they remain a good fit for the role they are applying for.
  • How do you see your future with the company?
    • There’s always the probability that a boomerang employee will bounce straight back out. From here, you can gauge whether they are a flight risk, or whether the factors that led them to quit remain an issue.
